Teams and cards
- 4 players in fixed partnerships: you and your partner (top) against the two players on your left and right. Play goes anticlockwise.
- 32 cards: J, 9, A, 10, K, Q, 8, 7 of each suit. Inside a suit they rank, high to low:
- J3
- 92
- A1
- 101
- K0
- Q0
- 80
- 70
- The small numbers are card points: J = 3, 9 = 2, A = 1, 10 = 1. That makes 28 points per deal. (The name comes from an old rule that gave 1 more point for the last trick, for 29.)
Bidding
- Everyone gets 4 cards. Starting after the dealer, each player bids higher than the current bid (16 to 28) or passes. Once you pass you're out of the auction.
- The auction ends when three players have passed. If the first three all pass, the dealer must bid at least 16.
- The bid is how many card points the bidder's team promises to take.
Trump
- The highest bidder picks trump in secret by putting one card of that suit face down beside them. Then everyone gets 4 more cards (8 in all).
- Nobody else knows the trump suit until it's revealed. If it's still hidden at the start of the last trick, it's revealed then.
Playing
- The player after the dealer leads first; the winner of each trick leads the next. You must follow suit if you can.
- If you can't follow suit and trump is still hidden, you may tap Show trump. The card is turned up for everyone and goes back to the bidder's hand. After asking, you must play a trump if you have one. (The bidder may do this too.)
- Before trump is revealed, the highest card of the suit led wins. Once it's revealed, the highest trump wins (trumps already played in that trick count too).
- Can't follow suit and don't want to ask? Play any card.
Pair (marriage)
- After trump is revealed, a player holding the K and Q of trump can tap Pair! on their turn, once their team has won at least one trick.
- Bidder's team declares it: their target goes down 4 (not below 16). The other team declares it: the target goes up 4 (not above 28).
Scoring
- The bidder's team takes the target or more: +1 game point. Fewer: −1. The other team's score doesn't change.
- The first team to +6 wins the game. A team that falls to −6 loses it.
- You have 25 seconds for each move. If time runs out, a legal card is played (or you pass) for you.
Twenty-Nine has many house rules (last-trick point, redeals, double and redouble, different pair timing). This is a common Nepali/Indian version.
