The game

• Dandi Biyo is played in village fields all over Nepal. The biyo is a short wooden peg, about 15 cm (6 in) long and tapered at both ends. It lies across the gucchi, a small hole or groove in the ground, and the batter plays it with the dandi, a stick about 61 cm (2 ft) long.
• Lift the biyo into the air, keep it up if you dare, then hit it as far as you can. The distance from the gucchi to where it stops gives your score. The pegs on the ground mark every 5 metres.

1. Flick it up

• The needle swings along the meter. Tap (the field, the Flick button or Space) when it is in the green: the dandi taps the biyo's tapered end and it pops up. The nearer the middle, the higher it pops. In the dark red ends the flick fails.

2. Keep it up, then hit

• While the biyo is in the air (in slow motion) a ring closes on it. When the ring closes you can:
• Juggle: tap the field, the Juggle button, or press J / Z. A light tap pops the biyo up again. It must be timed Good or Perfect (gold or green ring), or the biyo drops.
• Hit: swipe up on the field, press Hit!, or Space. This is the big final strike: Perfect!, Good or Weak. Early hits go higher and to the far side, late hits lower and to the near side.
• Every touch of the dandi in the air counts, the final hit included: 1, 2 or 3 air hits (at most two juggles, then you must hit).

3. Measuring (Traditional)

• The more air hits, the smaller the unit you measure with, so the bigger the score:

Air hits	Measured in	23.4 m is
1	Dandi lengths (61 cm)	38
2	Biyo lengths (15 cm)	156
3	Finger widths (forefinger to little finger, about 7.5 cm)	312

• Only whole units count. Each juggle is a risk: a dropped biyo scores nothing and costs a life.
• School version (choose it on the start screen or in setup): every hit is measured in dandi lengths and multiplied by the number of air hits, so 2 air hits over 38 dandi lengths score 76.

Loft

• Drag the Loft lever (or drag up and down on the field before you flick, or use ↑/↓) to choose a low drive or a high hit. You can change it until you hit.
• High hits carry further but hang in the air, so the fielders have time to get under them. Low drives are safer but shorter.

Lives and the innings

• You have 3 lives (the ring round your picture). A failed flick, a dropped juggle, a missed swing or a catch costs a life. Your scores add up until all three are gone.
• Being out when a fielder catches the biyo is a common local rule, and this game plays it. The fielders move before every hit, and move deeper when you hit it long. From the 7th hit a fourth child joins them.
• The meter speeds up and the slow motion wears off as the innings goes on.

Modes

• Solo challenge: one innings. Beat your best total, saved on this device for each scoring style.
• Friends & bots: 2 to 4 players take turns to bat, passing the device. Choose 1 to 3 innings each before you start; the highest total after the last innings wins. Any player can be a bot (Easy, Medium or Hard). Press Skip to jump to the end of a bot's innings.

Keys

• Space or Enter: flick, then hit. J or Z: juggle. ↑/↓: loft. Esc: menu.
